These perfect prom outfits are on trend in 2016 for Minnesota teens

Prom is one of the last bastions of dress-up occasions, and this year's big trends allow for full-on glamour with soft gowns and striking colors. Pretty pastels, lots of lace, vibrant floral prints and a touch of sparkle all add to the red-carpet feel this season, said Mall of America trend specialist Sara Rogers.

While many prom shoppers focus on picking a statement dress for the biggest event of high school life, Rogers said they should also keep an eye on the little things.

"It's really the nuances that make the dress special," Rogers said.

Details such as modest "peek-a-boo" patterns or a touch of metallic shimmer can set a dress apart as much as a bold color or pattern.

Rogers also likes dresses that sing spring, and this year's trends do just that. Florals are especially hot, she said. If you're in the market for one, get to the stores fast. "Some retailers say they can't keep it in stock," Rogers said.

No matter what the trends are, prom is always about celebrating with friends, kicking up your heels and having fun.

Metallics: Alana (left) stuns in a strapless black gown (Nordstrom, $448) that allows a peek of leg under a layer of sheer. Her matching black and gold choker (Forever 21, $5.90) adds horizontal delineation. Tori is on trend for spring with an ivory lace dress (A’Gaci, $35.90) topped with a cape in a sport coat silhouette (BCBG Max Azria, $228). Gold accessories — belt (A’Gaci, $6.90), earrings (Aldo Accessories, $15.98), ring (Forever 21, $5.90) and bangles (Bebe, $34) add shine. (The Minnesota Star Tribune)
