MILWAUKEE — The American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin says it regrets a prosecutor's decision not to charge a former Milwaukee police officer who was involved in a fatal shooting in April.

ACLU of Wisconsin Executive Director Chris Ahmuty says the decision not to charge former Officer Christopher Manney leaves a cloud of uncertainty over the circumstances surrounding the April 30 death of 31-year-old Dontre Hamilton.

Ahmuty asks whether anyone is legally responsible for Hamilton's death, and he wants to know what the Milwaukee Police Department will do to ensure officers don't kill unarmed individuals.

Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm said Manney acted in self-defense.
