A man who stole $15,000 from Animal Ark, a no-kill shelter based in St. Paul, was sentenced Wednesday to 19 months.

William C. Strobel, 27, pleaded guilty in July to one count of theft by swindle. According to the charges filed in Ramsey County District Court in May, he stole the money between Jan. 1 and March 31 while working as a temporary bookkeeper at the organization's thrift store in St. Paul.

An internal audit showed that Strobel covered up his theft by taking cash from the register and replacing it with patrons' cash donations, the charges said.

The 19-month sentence includes a probation violation from another theft conviction Strobel incurred in 2006.

District Judge Margaret (Peg) Marrinan also fined him $500 and ordered him to pay restitution.
