The death toll

August 5, 2008 at 2:20AM

Pakistan's Ministry of Tourism said the 11 climbers presumed dead on K2 over the weekend were three South Koreans, two Nepalis, two Pakistanis and one each from France, Ireland, Serbia and Norway. The Pakistani government did not give details of how the 11 died.

But reports said two climbers died on their way up to the summit and nine more died on their way down after a chunk of ice broke free in the area of K2 known as the Bottleneck. Dutch climber Wilco van Rooijen reported seeing three Koreans in distress; it was not clear if they were the three reported dead.
