Audrey Zhang, 11, of New York submitted the winning design, which is featured today on the Google homepage.

Her work was chosen from more than 100,000 entries nationwide, all from student artists pondering the theme, "If I could invent one thing to make the world a better place."

Zhang, featured in the video below, told people attending the award ceremony at Google headquarters that she came up with the design when she "learned that not everyone has clean water." Then she worked with Google's official "doodlers" to animate her artwork.

The Star Tribune wrote about Minnesota's finalist, Burnsville High School student Paul Nong, back in April. His drawing in colored pencil and charcoal depicted "The Dream Machine," which would make use of the time people spend sleeping.

Here's his drawing:

This was the seventh annual Doodle 4 Google contest. As the overall winner, Zhang took home a $30,000 college scholarship, a $50,000 technology grant for her school, and Google donated $20,000 in her name to charity:water.
