Alyssa Goehner, the two-time Star Tribune Metro Volleyball Player of the Year from Lakeville North, announced Monday that she will play for the University of Minnesota next year.
Goehner, a 5-11 outside hitter, had originally committed to Marquette but last week was granted her release because Golden Eagles coach Bond Shymansky left to take the head coaching position at Iowa, his alma mater. Goehner had visited Minnesota and Iowa last week before making her final decision.
"It's home," Goehner said in a text. "I'm at a top-level volleyball program coached by the former Olympic coach. I get to play with my best friends and my family will be there every step of the way. It's where I belong."

Zahui honored again
Gophers center Amanda Zahui B. was named the Big Ten women's basketball freshman of the week for the sixth time this season.
The Swede averaged a double-double with 16.5 points, 13.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game in helping the Gophers extend their winning streak to four games with victories at Wisconsin and at Northwestern.
Her six Big Ten freshman of the week selections tie Purdue's Courtney Moses for the second-most selections since the Big Ten started honoring rookies in 2009-10. Penn State's Maggie Lucas holds the record with eight selections in 2010-11.
Zahui leads the Big Ten in rebounding (11.0), defensive rebounds (7.7) and double-doubles (12).
