MADRID — A Spanish official says more than 550 firefighters backed by 17 water-carrying aircraft are trying to bring a large wildfire under control 92 kilometers (57 miles) west of Madrid.

Regional government spokesman Francisco Jose Sanchez says that although the flames, which were first detected Saturday, are still raging out of control a day later, he was hopeful the fire could be contained in coming hours.

He says there is some evidence the fire was started deliberately and investigators were looking into the matter.

Emergency services have rescued one man who suffered burns while fighting the flames, and an unspecified number of residents of what was described as a "hippie camp" were also evacuated.
