Joe and Maddie Mauer became the parents of baby girls this morning, according to Twins media relations director Dustin Morse.

Mauer was pulled from the Twins lineup before Tuesday night's game in Anaheim and flew home by charter.

He has been placed on baseball's paternity list and catcher Drew Butera was called up from Class AAA Rochester to replace him.

Chris Herrmann, Mauer's lineup replacement, hit a 10th inning grand slam in the Twins' 10-3 victory over Los Angeles.

The Mauers were wed in December and said in March that they were expecting twins.

Butera and outfielder Oswaldo Arcia were candidates to replace Mauer on the roster. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Arcia was pulled from Class AAA Rochester's game in the second inning Tuesday. after he failed to run out a ground ball, according to a blog post from Twins beat writer La Velle E. Neal III.

Butera, who spent the last three years as Mauer's backup, has been with Rochester all season, batting .215 in 79 at-bats after recovering from a broken left hand.
