Chevrolet brings a laundry list of changes to the Cobalt for the 2008 model year. These include revised model designations - last year's LTZ model is now called Sport. Other changes and upgrades include standard head curtain side-impact airbags, XM Satellite radio and a tire pressure monitoring system for all Cobalt models. The OnStar communications system is now standard for 2LT and Sport models. The Sport model also receives the StabiliTrak vehicle stability system as part of its standard equipment roster.
Base power for the small Chevrolet is generated by an Ecotec 2.2L four-cylinder engine. Cobalt Sport is equipped with an Ecotec 2.4L four-cylinder motor with variable valve timing. The standard gearbox for both engines is a five-speed manual gearbox. A Hydra-Matic 4T45 electronic four-speed automatic transmission is optional.
On the road, the sedan has a smooth and fluid power delivery. Handling is nimble and controlled at all times.
Inside the cabin, attention to detail is at a level approaching vehicles costing thousands more. A high level of refinement is apparent in the quality of the materials, appointments and styling cues used throughout the cabin. Displays, controls and switchgear reflect a modern, tasteful expression of class and refinement.
Comfort is emphasized with seating designed to reflect the various trim levels. Cobalt features plenty of interior flexibility, including easy access to the rear seat, 60/40 folding rear seats and ample, versatile storage.
The long list of standard features includes air conditioning, electric rear defogger, CD player and driver information center. Available features include heated leather seats, power sunroof and a Pioneer AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system.
Safety features include dual front airbags, head curtain side- impact airbags, automatic headlamp control and tire pressure monitor. LT adds remote keyless entry and power door locks. Sport adds four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock, OnStar communications system, fog lights, StabiliTrak vehicle stability system and traction control.
