BASKETBALL

Calipari wins Naismith Memphis' John Calipari was named Naismith National Coach of the Year by the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Wednesday. Calipari led the Tigers to the NCAA title game, where they lost 75-68 in overtime to Kansas. It's the second Naismith award for Calipari, who won in 1996 after leading Massachusetts to the Final Four.

• LSU intends to hire Stanford's Trent Johnson, who led the Cardinal to the round of 16 in this year's NCAA tournament, as its new coach. Several people at LSU familiar with the selection process said a formal announcement was expected today.

• West Virginia forward Joe Alexander and USC freshman guard O.J. Mayo said they would leave college early to enter the NBA draft.

Bill Bayno returned to college basketball after an eight-year absence, signing a five-year deal to coach Loyola Marymount. Bayno, 45, guided UNLV to a 95-65 record and two NCAA tournament appearances in 1995-2000. He was fired during the 2000-2001 season, later filed a wrongful termination suit and received a settlement from UNLV.

• The New York Liberty will host the first regular-season outdoor game in pro basketball history at the U.S. Open. The game against the Indiana Fever will be held July 19 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, N.Y.

HOCKEY

Canada advances to final Sarah Vaillancourt scored goals in a 37-second span of the second period, and Canada beat Finland 4-2 and advanced to the title game in the women's world hockey championship in Harbin, China.

Canada will face the U.S. today in the final round-robin game. Canada and the U.S. have met in the final of all 10 previous world championships, but the Americans' 1-0 loss to Finland on Tuesday left them needing to beat Canada to make it to the final.

SWIMMING

3 more records; 8 more suits The short-course world championships started with a bang in Manchester, England, with three world records and the new Speedo LZR Race suits involved in all of them. The decision by swimming's world governing body, FINA, not to ban the new high-tech Speedo suits resulted in another heap of records in the pool.

The records: Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe in the 400-meter individual medley; the U.S. team of Ryan Lochte, Bryan Lundquist, Nathan Adrian and Doug Van Wie in the men's 400 freestyle relay, and the Dutch team of Inge Dekker, Fernke Heemskerk, Marleen Veldhuis and Ranomi Kromowidjojo in the women's 800 freestyle relay.

Eight of the nine swimmers involved wore the new Speedo suit. Only Van Wie, in a TYR brand suit, did not wear a Speedo LZR. The LZR now has been worn for 21 of the 22 world records set since it was introduced in February.

TENNIS

Davenport gains third round in Florida Lindsay Davenport defeated Jill Craybas 6-1, 6-4 and reached the third round of the Bausch & Lomb Championships in Amelia Island, Fla., escaping on a Wednesday filled with upsets.

Seeded players Daniela Hantuchova (No. 3), Patty Schnyder (5) and Sybille Bammer (9) were upset in earlier play.

SOCCER

ManU, Barcelona gain semis Manchester United beat visiting AS Roma 1-0 and reached the European Champions League semifinals. ManU won the home-and-home series on 3-0 aggregate and will play Barcelona, which defeated visiting Schalke 1-0 and advanced on 2-0 aggregate. Liverpool will play Chelsea in the other semifinal.

• The U.S. women's soccer team qualified for the Beijing Olympics, beating Costa Rica 3-0 in the CONCACAF qualifying tournament semifinals in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. The U.S. will face Canada, which beat Mexico 1-0, in the final Saturday night. Both finalists get spots in the Olympics.

• Goals by Gambian forwards Sainey Nyassi and Kenny Mansally led the New England Revolution (2-1) to a 3-1 MLS victory over the Wizards (2-1) in Kansas City, Kan.

AROUND THE HORN

Baseball: Notre Dame's Brett Lilley set a Division I record when he was hit by a pitch for the 93rd time in his career in the Irish's 13-8 victory over Manchester College.

Curling: China upset the previously undefeated Canadian team at the World Men's Curling Championship in Grand Forks, N.D. The Canadians then rebounded to defeat the Czech Republic 6-1 and stayed atop the standings with an 8-1 record. The U.S. defeated Sweden 8-6 and Germany and improved to 5-4.
