Virginia school board chairman has resigned, as of now

VIRGINIA - School board chairman Dennis Hendricks abruptly resigned Monday, citing personal reasons.

"It was short notice," Superintendent Deron Stender said.

Hendricks had served as chairman since January. Stender said Tim Riordan, the vice chairman, will serve as interim chairman while the school board figures out its next step.

Stender said Hendricks, who works in management in one of the area's mines, "was a strong board member and will be greatly missed."

Hendricks' resignation follows Virginia's mayor, Steve Peterson, who also stepped down. Peterson said he couldn't continue to be mayor and economic development director of the Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation Board.
