Longer and wider than its predecessor, the new, fourth-generation C-Class sedans from Mercedes-Benz reveal an edgy interplay of taut lines and broad serene surfaces that typify the latest Mercedes design idiom. Plus, for the first time on a Mercedes-Benz sedan, the iconic three-pointed star is in the center of the front grille.

Offered in C300 Luxury, C300 Sport and C350 Sport models, power for the new sedans is generated by a pair of V-6 engines, a 3.0L and a 3.5L. The engines are connected to the automaker's seven-speed automatic transmission with adaptive shift logic and Touch Shift. C-Class Sport models are equipped with a newly designed short-throw NSG 510 six-speed manual gearbox. RWD models equipped with the 3.0L V-6 and automatic transmission are E-85 capable. Mercedes-Benz's 4MATIC full-time four-wheel drive system is an available option.

Underway, the C-Class sedan is an absolute joy to drive. Once around the block in this sedan and everyone is going to want one. The seven years that the automaker dedicated in its development were well spent. Bigger in overall size, yet so very personal, the C-Class is a refreshing change from the "me too" machines that populate its market segment of near luxury sedans.

When it comes to body integrity, the C-Class sets an industry record in its use of high-strength steel. With a focus on minimizing weight while providing the greatest amount of structural strength, the 2008 C-Class unit body design has about 70 percent high-strength steel and about 20 percent ultra-high-strength steel alloys in its body structure. To improve handling and control, engineers lowered and moved the engine rearward in the engine compartment, contributing to better dynamics and front/rear weight balance.

Inside the cabin, more space means more comfort. Mercedes engineers also attached great importance to entering and exiting the vehicle - so the front door openings are larger and the new shape of the rear seat cushions also facilitate back seat access.

The high-quality appearance of the interior is the result of a special production process that leaves a seamless surface with no lines or joints. Air vents and controls blend into the upper dashboard and are finished in a dark color to minimize glare, while the lower section around the glove box, center console and knee protection wears the dominant interior color.

The new instrument cluster features three analog gauges that show engine speed, road speed, fuel level and coolant temperature. A 4.5-inch display in the center of the speedometer is linked to a 12-button multi-function steering wheel that can call up a variety of helpful information such as odometer, range, oil level, distance, time traveled and average speed and mpg. It can also display phone and audio information such as radio station, CD track or MP3 playlist. When equipped with the optional navigation system, this display will also show next-turn directions or phone book numbers.

Safety features are plentiful: Dual front airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, window curtain airbags, electronic stability program, brake assist, tire pressure monitoring system, four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock, daytime running lights, remote keyless entry, anti-theft alarm, engine immobilizer, front/rear fog lights, automatic headlamp control, hill start assist, central locking system, automatic door locks and automatic slip control. C350 Sport adds rain-sensing windshield wipers and garage door opener. Optional safety equipment includes corner illuminating fog lights, Bi-HID (high intensity discharge) headlamps, TeleAid communications system and navigation system.
