StIllwater to add early learning center

March 12, 2011 at 1:59AM

What: Stillwater Area Schools will build an Early Childhood Family Education Center after all, the board decided on a 7-0 vote Thursday.

Where: The building will be located on the Stillwater Junior High School campus. A plan to place the center in Lake Elmo fell through earlier this week. "We've considered numerous other options, and we feel confident this is the right home for our early childhood program," interim Superintendent Tom Nelson said.

How much: The district received a $1 million grant in 2009 to build the center, which will cost $11 million. The remaining money will come from a state-authorized local lease levy, which is the same way the lease for the existing building has been funded.

When: Officials say the building will open in the fall of 2012.
