Celebrities get Iowa in hot water

What we've learned: If a basketball recruit meets Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, a meeting with the NCAA might ensue.

The University of Iowa told the NCAA the school allowed two basketball recruits to meet celebrity Hawkeye fans Kutcher and Moore, a recruiting violation.

The recruits, Josh Oglesby and Marcus Paige, met the married movie stars at an Iowa-Iowa State football game in September and met two former Iowa basketball players the same day, the Des Moines Register reported Sunday. NCAA rules prohibit recruits from contact with individuals who represent a university's athletic interests.

Kutcher is from Iowa and attended the university, and he occasionally attends Hawkeyes games.

"The university is remorseful that these violations occurred," associated athletic director Fred Mims wrote in a letter to the NCAA on Oct. 1. "We believe they were the result of sloppy management by our basketball staff."

Denver player has neck fractures University of Denver forward Jesse Martin suffered three neck fractures during a game at North Dakota and faces emergency surgery, the Denver Post reported.

Martin's father, Terry Martin, said his son was knocked unconscious and had no use of his extremities for several minutes. He regained movement while being taken to a Grand Forks, N.D., hospital. He was to have surgery in Minneapolis.

Westwood takes Woods' No. 1 spot For the first time in more than five years, Tiger Woods is not golf's No. 1 player.

Lee Westwood of England took the top ranking, becoming the first European in 16 years to be No. 1 in the world and only the fourth player to get there without having won a major.

Westwood knew he would go to No. 1 as long as PGA champion Martin Kaymer did not finish among the top two at the Andalucia Masters in Spain. Kaymer tied for 21st.

• Ben Crane drove the green on the 292-yard 15th hole and made an 8-foot putt for eagle in winning the Asia Pacific Classic in Selangor, Malaysia. The event involved PGA Tour players but wasn't a sanctioned event because it had only a 40-player field.

• Na Yeon Choi successfully defended her title in the LPGA Hana Bank Championship in Incheon, South Korea, shooting a 3-under 69 for a two-stroke victory over Vicky Hurst.

• Brendan Steele won the Nationwide Tour Championship, beating Colt Knost on the fourth hole of a playoff in Charleston, S.C. Each player won his PGA Tour card by moving into the top 25 in Nationwide earnings this season.

Clijsters wins WTA Championships U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters defeated top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 and won the WTA Championships in Doha, Qatar.

The 27-year-old Belgian won her fifth title of the season. Clijsters played her first tournament since the U.S. Open title in September, sidelined because of an infected foot.

Figure skating: Canada's Vanessa Crone and Paul Poirier won the ice dance title at Skate Canada International in Kingston, Ontario, for their first ISU Grand Prix title. British siblings Sinead and John Kerr finished second, and Americans Madison Chock and Greg Zuerlein finished third.
