September 20, 2010 at 7:25PM

Hurricane Igor will swipe Newfoundland with damaging winds and flooding rainbefore reverting to an oceanic storm over the open North Atlantic Ocean. The worst of Igor's wind and rain will strike the island on Tuesday followingsteadily deteriorating weather Monday night.

The eastern half of the Island will fare the worst, as rainfall will reach 4 toas much as 8 inches by Tuesday night. The highest winds will reach 50 to 75 mphwith higher local gusts at the coast.

The impact of the rain will be to swell streams and lakes as it triggers someflooding. The spongelike action of the many lakes and ponds will tend tomoderate stream flooding.

Winds will have potential for some damage. However, since the island's climateis stormy, structures tend to be sturdy and weather-resistant.

Elsewhere, Igor's impact upon eastern Canada will drop off sharply towards thewest. Gusty winds and some rain will hit western Newfoundland and much of NovaScotia.
