Although they've been going on for decades, collaborations between Chinese and Minnesota colleges still have a whiff of exoticism, as do the photos opening Friday at the Chambers Hotel gallery in downtown Minneapolis. The show features images by about 25 students and faculty members from the University of Minnesota and the Beijing Film Academy, which bills itself as one of Asia's largest film and television schools. Their photos range from conceptual pieces -- bodies immersed in bubbles or trapped in a bottle -- to landscapes, portraits and street images that highlight the clash of cultures. The double-layered, East-West photo shown here is by Gao Zinwei. (Free opening reception 6-9 p.m. Friday 5/9.)

FILE -- A rent deposit slot at an apartment complex in Tucker, Ga., on July 21, 2020.
