Repetition Is Change: Ecstatic/Restrained

Ryan Fontaine creates sculptural investigations into painting, playing with the loosely deteriorating nature of signs. In one large-scale piece in the basement of Hair and Nails gallery, white chunky lines are carved into a black rectangle, creating a flag-like symbol that stands rather than hangs. In another room, Kristen Van Loon places a pile of New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham's street-fashion pages on a podium; on the walls, she plasters bright fliers of performing arts company Shen Yun, which purports to tell the entire history of China. The repetition therein offers a meditation on the loss of print and its oversaturation. (Artist talk 7:30 p.m. Fri. Hair and Nails, 2222½ E. 35th St., Mpls. hairandnailsart.com)

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
