It's New/ It's Now: Recent Gifts of Contemporary Prints and Drawings
Opening today: Contemporary prints and drawings cover the same wide range that the artists' work does on canvas or in steel, generally at much lower prices. For those and other reasons, prints and drawings appeal to collectors, including many supporters of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, to which they have donated more than 90 original artworks. The gifts are showcased in an exhibit opening today. It includes self-portrait sketches and figurative lithographs such as David Hockney's 1980 portrait, "Celia in an Armchair," shown here. Plus landscapes, abstractions and political imagery by 60 top American and European artists active in the past half-century, including Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Jim Dine, Jasper Johns, Helen Frankenthaler, Chuck Close, Joan Mitchell, Richard Serra, Gerhard Richter, Red Grooms and Kiki Smith.
