'Sons of Northern Darkness'

Mysticism and tattoo art come come together in the first show from the founding members of art collective Mpls Deth Crew. In their series of new paintings and installations, Chris Krapohl and Nate Vincent Szklarski explore imagery and symbols of theology and astrology, including "total depravity" (the religious doctrine of original sin) and the symbol of Neptune. The twist comes with how ancient mysticism and magic interact with modern day tattoo art. Opening night -- planned to coincide with the day French astronomer Urbain Le Verrier and British astronomer John Couch Adams discovered Neptune in 1846 -- includes music from DJ Bitsbits, live music by Nomia and lights and projected imagery by Wonderhaus. Free opening reception 8 p.m.-1 a.m. Fri. 9/23.

NEMAA Fall Fine Arts Show

One of the Twin Cities' largest group shows of the year is popping up in the heart of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District. The NEMAA Fall Fine Arts Show can always be counted on to showcase art in painting, photography, sculpture and mixed media from its 150-plus member artists. Friday's opening night gala includes hors d'oeuvres from Chowgirls Killer Catering, beer from Surly, live music from Nick Haas and Joel Shapira, a silent auction and voting for the NEMAA's "People's Choice" award.
