'Building on Building'

Last in the Twin Cities to collaborate with Broken Crow on Shuga Records' mural, New York-based street artist Erik Burke is back, this time within the confines of a gallery. Burke, who works primarily on the street under the name Over Under, aims to bring art from stiff-lipped museums to the masses. His recent residency at XYandZ now culminates with a film and installation exhibit. For the gallery show, Burke uses spray paint on thin, inexpensive paper to illustrate masked figures confined in architectural imagery -- in effect, bringing the buildings that typically serve as his canvas indoors. '76 Faces of the First'

St. Paul artist and history buff Jay Wittenberg has spent the past four years painting portraits of 76 members of Minnesota's First Regiment whose legendary valor is said to have turned the tide in key Civil War battles. The Minnesota volunteers fought in the First Battle of Bull Run and at Antietam and, most memorably, at Gettysburg. Inspired by their stories, Wittenberg has painted portraits of them based on historic photos. Coinciding with the sesquicentennial of the start of the Civil War, the exhibit includes photos, letters and military memorabilia. More event details.

FILE -- A rent deposit slot at an apartment complex in Tucker, Ga., on July 21, 2020. As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
