Art: 'Anthology' and 'Sincerely Yours'
The photographers and writers behind some of the biggest local music stories of 2010 are in the spotlight with this show by Permanent Art & Design Group and XYandZ Gallery. The exhibition focuses on live-music photography by three of the scene's most prolific lenses: Erik Hess, Stacy Schwartz and Steve Cohen. Curators Andrea Swensson, Kate Iverson and Robyn Lewis will juxtapose the imagery with words from themselves and various Twin Cities music writers, including Jay Gabler, Cyn Collins and Jeff Gage. Judging from the bands featured -- Jeremy Messersmith, the Jayhawks, Har Mar Superstar, P.O.S., Cloud Cult and others -- it looks to be a fitting year-in-local-music retrospective. 'Sincerely Yours: Personal Perspectives From Tamarind'
Before artists rediscovered printmaking in the 1960s, etching, lithography and other print media were considered musty, antiquarian art forms. Enter the Tamarind Lithography Workshop, an innovative Los Angeles enterprise whose grand ambition was to "save lithography." Driven by exacting standards and crazy energy, Tamarind and a few other pioneering studios did indeed put printmaking back on the agendas of art schools, collectors and museums. Minneapolis' own Highpoint Center for Printmaking is part of that legacy, and will host a retrospective of Tamarind prints by famous (Jim Dine, Lesley Dill) and pretty much unknown artists. Tamarind long ago moved to Albuquerque, N.M., and morphed into an institute hooked up with the University of New Mexico, but it has retained its inventive energy. Fri.-April 9, free.
