A quarrel between a daughter and her father over whether she could take her son for an overnight visit ended in gunfire that left the man with two bullet wounds last week in a quiet Woodbury neighborhood.
No charges have been filed in the shooting of James J. Rabideau, 44, of Woodbury. He and his daughter, Amber A. Rabideau, 22, of Eagan, have given police differing accounts of how James Rabideau was shot in the abdomen and right hip just before 10 a.m. Feb. 22.
Investigators have said evidence collected at the home at 2200 Kings Drive, and from James Rabideau, is being analyzed by the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and will help point to the shooter and determine possible charges. A request by police for a search warrant shows where the accounts of the shooting differ.
According to the warrant, James Rabideau told police his daughter had come to the home with her fiancé, Christopher Urban, 22, of Eagan, to pick up her 3-year-old son, whom James Rabideau said had been cared for by he and his wife since birth.
Investigators have said neither Urban nor two children in the home saw the shooting.
As the argument escalated, the warrant says, James Rabideau told the two children to go to the basement to keep them from hearing the fight. James Rabideau said he and his daughter went to an upstairs bedroom to talk. There, he told her an attorney had suggested that Amber should not have the boy overnight.
James Rabideau told police he left to get a drink of water, and when he returned Amber was holding his .22-caliber semi-automatic handgun. As the argument intensified, the warrant says, James Rabideau told police that he struck her and tried to get the gun away when it went off.
James Rabideau said he crawled to the kitchen and called 911. That's where he was found when officers arrived.
