BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — A Colombian suspected of using submarines to smuggle 8 tons of cocaine to the United States has been extradited from Argentina to the U.S. for trial.

Argentine federal police officers say they escorted Ignacio Alvarez Meyendorff on Wednesday to Buenos Aires' Ezeiza airport for a flight to New York.

Police arrested him with help from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration when he arrived in Buenos Aires on a flight from Tahiti in 2011.

U.S. authorities say he is suspected of organizing the submarine trips for Colombia's Norte del Valle drug cartel.

Alvarez Meyendorff has said he is innocent.

He's known by the nicknames "Old Man" and "Big Brother."
