EAGAN

Art park to celebrate founder's birthdayCaponi Art Park at 1205 Diffley Road in Eagan will celebrate the 90th birthday of its founder, Anthony Caponi, with an open house from 1-4 p.m. May 7.

For more than 40 years Caponi -- an Italian-born sculptor, author and art professor emeritus at Macalester College from 1942-1991 -- has been developing the Caponi Art Park and Learning Center on 60 acres in Eagan.

It opened to the public for tours in 1987, and in 1992, a non-profit corporation was formed to expand its programs.

Caponi has been a pioneer in the movement to promote public art, community involvement in art and open-space preservation, and he continues to actively shape the direction of the art park.

Visitors will be able to explore the park and enjoy an afternoon of performers, art activities and games -- as well as some birthday cake.

A formal presentation honoring Caponi is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, go to www.caponiartpark.org/birthday.
