St. Cloud State's ride on Cloud 9 came to an abrupt halt.
Just one week removed from a dismantling of defending NCAA Division II national champion Minnesota Duluth and a lofty fifth-place national ranking, the Huskies lost 19-14 to host Bemidji State on Saturday, ending their six-game winning streak.
The Beavers, who hadn't beaten the Huskies since 1977, trailed 7-0 but scored 19 unanswered points behind quarterback Lance Rongstad. The junior passed for 126 yards and one touchdown, while rushing for 69 yards and another score.
St. Cloud State's Damon Treat caught a 21-yard TD with 87 seconds to go, but the onside kick was recovered by the Beavers.
Concordia (St. Paul) 20, Upper Iowa 19: Spencer Ohm connected with Charles Gilbert on a 62-yard Hail Mary with no time remaining, giving the Golden Bears an improbable victory in West Union, Iowa.
Concordia, which won despite getting outgained 553-359 and committing three turnovers, scored 13 points in the final 2 minutes, 9 seconds. The final drive covered 84 yards in 10 seconds.
Gilbert caught a 27-yard touchdown with 2:09 to go, putting Concordia within 19-14. The Peacocks recovered the onside kick, and on fourth-and-8 from the Concordia 16 with time winding down, they decided on a Cole Jaeschke quarterback keeper. He was stuffed for no gain, giving the ball to the Golden Bears on downs.
On the first play, Ohm found Gilbert for 22 yards before he stepped out of bounds with three seconds left. That set up Ohm's desperation heave, which found Gilbert coming out of a crowd in the end zone.
