Apple to Lala: byebye

Reincarnation inevitable.

Apple shut down Lala, if you didn't know. It's one of those online music services that attempted to pry customers away from Pandora, Rhapsody, and the rest. Apple bought it five months ago, and will close it at the end of the month.

Why? Either sheer meanness, because Jobs heard them play three songs in a row he didn't like and commanded his Orcs to DESTROY LALA, or because they're busy stitching its technology into iTunes.

No, you're right; when you think about it, it doesn't have to be one or the other. And I love the fact that "Apple shuts down Lala" is a business story, not a chapter heading in children's book. The internet needs more grown-up company names. I'd like to invest in a start-up somewhere, but it's hard to commit your money to something that sounds like an adjective from Dr. Seuss.

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
