Another Stormy Day in the I-95 Corridor

August 11, 2009 at 12:25PM

Tuesday will be another day of wild weather for parts of the I-95 corridorin the Northeast. Following numerous reports of wind damage and flooding overthe weekend and record-challenging heat on Monday, areas from Richmond toBoston are again in the zone where two distinct air masses are clashing.A ridge of high pressure centered near the Carolina coast will continue tobring tropical moisture up the East Coast. Meanwhile, a cooler and drier airmass is slowly but surely crossing the Great Lakes. An unstable atmosphere willbe the end result where the two air masses come together, and isolated butheavy thunderstorms will develop during the afternoon.

The main threat from today's thunderstorms will be torrential downpours andlocalized flash flooding. A few of the storms will also produce damaging gustywinds and even hail. The threat for such storms will continue into the eveninghours but will diminish a few hours after sunset on Tuesday as daytime heatingis no longer providing fuel for the storms.
