Another Midwest Flood Threat

April 1, 2009 at 1:30PM

The northern Plains will likely not be the only part of the nation'smidsection to be inundated in the upcoming days. Heavy rain will threaten tocause problems over parts of the Midwest Thursday into Thursday night.A potent storm set to tap into moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will deliverthe soaking rain. The same storm will ignite a widespread outbreak of severeweather over the South.

The greatest potential for flash flooding lies from northern Arkansas toIllinois and Indiana. Rain totals will range between 2 to 3 inches. The rainwill pour down in only a 6- to 10-hour time frame. Small streams will quicklyfill up and inundate nearby land and roads. Flooding would also occur inlow-lying and poor drainage areas.

The rain will spread farther into the Great Lakes and Northeast Thursdaynight and Friday. Rain amounts should not be as extreme but could be heavyenough to cause localized flooding problems.
