An Anoka County effort to exempt eight cities upstream of Minneapolis from proposed land-use rules along the Mississippi River has drawn support from two cities and two chambers of commerce.
The Anoka and Coon Rapids city councils have passed resolutions similar to one passed by the County Board seeking legislation to exempt their riverfront lands from the rules being developed, with city input, by the state Department of Natural Resources. "They are creating rules that limit the rights of private property owners," Anoka Mayor Phil Rice said.
The MetroNorth Chamber of Commerce and Anoka Area Chamber of Commerce also have indicated support for an exemption, county spokeswoman Martha Weaver said. Weaver said the county is working with four area legislators to draft a bill on the exemption.
