Record cold gripped central portions of Alaska last year (2009) during themiddle of November. Lows plummeted as low as 40 to 50 degrees F below zeroduring this time period as an arctic air mass remained firmly in place.By the Nov. 21, Fairbanks, Alaska, hit a high of only 25 degrees below zero.

The normal high there for the date is 8 degrees.

In recent days, Fairbanks has been mild for this time of year, with highsreaching into the lower 20s. This is a huge difference compared to lastyear.
