Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

Tuesday: This legendary company showcases the enduring legacy of its late founder (1931-89) while demonstrating the caliber of African-based contemporary dance. It will present two signature works by Ailey — "Cry," which portrays a woman's suffering through a life of slavery, and "Revelations," one of the choreographer's most heralded works, encompassing sorrow, joy and hope. The program also includes two new pieces by African-American choreographers: Ronald K. Brown's "Open Door," a fusion of African forms and rhythms, set to the music of Arturo O'Farrill and his Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, and Rennie Harris' hip-hop piece "Exodus," set to gospel, house music and spoken word. (7:30 p.m. Tue. $54-$74. Northrop, University of Minnesota, 84 SE. Church St., Mpls. 612-624-2345, northrop.umn.edu.)
