Alec Soth wonders about photo he didn't sell

Little Brown, according to Soth, wanted to crop the image and photoshop a young woman into the left foreground, like so:

Soth said no to that idea. Then, three years ago, he saw the book at a Barnes & Noble, with a cover that was similar, but modified. As in:
