After Flooding the Philippines, Ketsana Heads Towards Vietnam

Tropical Storm Ketsana developed just before making landfall in thePhilippines early on Saturday. Very heavy rain has fallen across most of thePhilippines. Ketsana is now moving west of Luzon, Philippines, across the SouthChina Sea. But heavy rain is still falling across the island nation.Rainfall over the past day has totaled more than 10 inches in parts of thePhilippines. Diliman has received 17 inches of rain since Friday. Tanay wassoaked with 16 inches. Manila received 9.17 inches in a 30-hour period.

Record rainfall was reported in Manila. According to the government meteorologyservice, the 24 hour rainfall record was broken when 13 inches fell in just 6hours.

Ketsana will remain a tropical storm as it moves across the South China Sea andtakes aim at Vietnam. It could reach typhoon strength before reaching land.

Heavy rain from such a storm could prove devastating. Vietnam is expected toreceive numerous showers and thunderstorms this weekend. These showers andthunderstorms could produce upwards of 5-10 inches of rain in many areas. Whencombined with additional heavy rain expected from Ketsana, flash flooding andmudslides are possible.
