An adult and a 6-month-old baby were in "very critical condition" Monday evening after a two-vehicle crash at Franklin and Portland avenues in Minneapolis, police said.

Spokesman John Elder said officers went to the scene at 7:12 p.m. and found a car on its roof south of the intersection; the baby and two adults were in that vehicle. The second adult also was injured, but not as seriously as the others. A minivan was in the middle of the intersection, with two people who were hurt, but not with life-threatening injuries. Elder said.

All five were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. Elder said that footage from traffic cameras in the area will be examined to help determine what happened. The intersection is controlled by a four-way traffic light.

Elder said officers didn't know whether the child was secured in a safety seat.

Paramedics arrived before officers and wanted to get the child and the badly injured adult to the hospital as soon as possible.
