Activities on the water dominate upcoming parks weekend schedule

Kayaking opportunities and more are part of the weekend's events at state and regional parks in Minnesota.

Geocaching 101

Jay Cooke State Park

4-5 p.m. Friday

Learn how to search for caches with a global positioning system. Then, explore the park for hidden caches. GPS units available at the interpretive center. (1-218-673-7006, mndnr.gov)

Walking stick

Whitewater State Park

12:30-2 p.m. Saturday

Transform buckthorn, an invasive species, into a practical tool you can take home with you and learn how to stop the spread of invasive species when you're hiking and fishing. (1-507-932-3007, mndnr.gov)

Focus on turtles

Wild River State Park

2-3 p.m. Saturday

Take in a presentation about all of the native turtle species in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Children will get to hand-feed a large tortoise and feel the differences between five native species that also make an appearance. (651-583-2125, ext. 227, mndnr.gov).

Yoga near the river

Interstate State Park

8-9 a.m. Sunday

Start your day with gentle, restorative yoga along the banks of the St. Croix River. Meet at the park's main picnic area (campground end of the park). Bring a water bottle and yoga mat or towel if you have one. (651-465-5711, ext. 225, mndnr.gov)

Archery day

William O'Brien State Park

10 a.m.-noon Sunday

Certified archery instructors will be on hand to instruct, and bows and arrows will be provided. The program is designed for children age 8 and older, but beginners are welcome. Children age 15 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. (651-433-0500, mndnr.gov)

Fishing 101

Father Hennepin State Park

10 a.m.-noon Sunday

Learn all about fishing: Identify species, learn to cast, and more. Poles, bait and instructor provided. No fishing license is needed for Minnesota residents. Meet at the public boat access parking lot. (1-320-676-8763, mndnr.gov)

Family kayaking

Carver Park Reserve

1-3 p.m. Sunday

Learn kayaking safety and proper paddling techniques. Cost is $20. Make a reservation by Friday. Call 763-559-6700. This program is for ages 8 and older. Equipment provided. (threeriversparks.org)

Kayaking basics

Fish Lake Regional Park

6-9 p.m. Tuesday

Learn safety skills and proper paddling techniques with qualified instructors. Beginners and anyone who has never had formal instruction will benefit. Equipment provided. Cost is $50. Make a reservation by calling 763-559-6700. This program is for ages 14 and older. (threeriversparks.org)
