A 21-year-old man was sentenced Thursday for his role in a burglary last November that left a Roseville police K-9 partially paralyzed.

James Ricky McBain, of Maplewood, pleaded guilty in February to one count of felony possession of burglary tools. Another count of felony attempted theft was dismissed.

Ramsey County District Judge George Stephenson gave McBain a stayed sentence of one year and one day in prison and put him on probation for three years.

McBain was with Roel Joseph Perez Jr., 21, of Maplewood, and Ryan Neil Dorner, 23, of Mahtomedi, on Nov. 12 when the three broke into Truck Utilities in Maplewood, according to criminal charges. Police responding to the burglary alarm caught Dorner and McBain running from the area.

Perez stabbed K-9 Major four times, leaving his hind legs paralyzed. Perez pleaded guilty to felony attempted theft and causing great bodily harm to a public safety dog, a gross misdemeanor. In February, Perez was sentenced to 120 days in jail and four years probation. He also received a stayed sentence of one year and one day in prison.

Dorner, who pleaded guilty to attempted theft, is scheduled to be sentenced in May.
