Access Vikings morning walkthrough: Excitement for linebackers, praise for Harris, Floyd and more from camp

On most mornings, we walk you through what's going on with the Vikings.

WHAT YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED

— The Vikings are excited about their young, talented group of linebackers. "We haven't been this deep at the position in my 10 years," Chad Greenway said. How deep? Five linebackers could possibly have significant roles.

— When he was done poking fun at the Vikings company softball team, Norv Turner had some praise for first-team right guard Mike Harris.

— Look out, interior linemen. Defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd is comfortable and confident heading into his second year under Mike Zimmer.

— Unlike Harrison Smith, Matt Kalil says he's cool with fifth-year options.

— The Vikings have a rich tradition of ironmen, with the top three streaks in NFL history belonging to former Vikings. Can John Sullivan keep it going?

— It was a tale of two running backs in one pass-protection drill yesterday.

AROUND THE NFC NORTH

— The Lions are "majorly concerned" about the health of last year's leading rusher, Joique Bell. But they hope he will be ready to roll soon.

— Willie Young of the Bears is getting used to his new position after new coach John Fox moved him from defensive end to outside linebacker.

— The Packers used to prioritize size at cornerback under Ron Wolf. But right now just one of their top cornerbacks stands above 6-feet tall.

TODAY'S VIKINGS SCHEDULE

Today brings the first night practice of training camp. From 7:15 to 9:15 p.m., the Vikings will practice in pads under the lights at Blakeslee Stadium. There will be fireworks after the practice, too. First things first, though, the Vikings have to go through their walkthrough, which is at 10:30 a.m.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

As I wrote in that linebackers story for today's newspaper, Greenway has played more games (124) than the rest of the linebacker group combined (102). After him, the most veteran guy at the position is 26-year-old Audie Cole. The Vikings feel that Greenway can still play at a starting-caliber level for at least another season, but with such a young, inexperienced group of linebackers, they no doubt felt they needed his leadership back, too.
