Absentee ballot turnout topples old numbers

More absentee ballots will be counted in Tuesday's primary than have been tallied in any of the elections in past 20 years.

Almost 30,000 voters for sure won't be at the polls in Tuesday's election -- they've already voted.

By Monday afternoon, local election officials had accepted 28,992 absentee ballots -- busting the two decade record of 25,257 ballots set in 1998. And more ballots may yet be counted.

The numbers, for the first summer primary for 70 years, may be a reflection of the cabin-season date. They could also mean that DFL candidates for governor and others facing contested primaries did their jobs well and got their voters to cast ballots.

For those left in town, polls open tomorrow and you can find your polling place here.
