ABOUT THE IDITAROD

The trail winds more than 1,100 miles from Anchorage, in south central Alaska, to Nome on the western Bering Sea coast. A team of 12 to 16 dogs and a musher brave the elements to traverse the unforgiving terrain. It generally takes from 10 to 17 days to finish. Ninety-six mushers were registered for this year's race, which began over the weekend. The Iditarod Trail began as route for mail and supplies in the 1920s. The first full Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race was in 1973. For more information and updates, go to www.iditarod.com
