About three dozen animals died in a barn fire on the edge of the Twin Cities metro area, authorities said Monday.

The homeowner on 85th Street NE., just southwest of Monticello, was awakened about 5:40 a.m. Sunday by "loud popping noises" coming from the barn, the Wright County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Firefighters from Monticello and neighboring departments fought the flames, but the barn was a total loss, the Sheriff's Office said.

Killed in the blaze were several horses, two dogs and about 30 cats, the Sheriff's Office said.
