Unusual warmth more befitting late May than early April has swept into northern and northeastern China as of Tuesday and Wednesday. It will be even warmer on Thursday over a wide area due to warm air sweeping in from the south and west.

At Beijing, the temperature topped 80 degrees on Wednesday, a normal high of 65 notwithstanding. A similar high was experienced on Thursday.

Likewise, in Harbin, a city renowned for its bitter winter cold, the high was in the low 70s on Wednesday. The city approached the 80-degree mark Thursday even though the normal high is near 50 degrees.

Cooling will reach the northeast on Friday, yet the heart of northern China will have unusual warmth right into next week.
