A quick "reconciliation" snapshot for recount watchers.

Republican Tom Emmer's campaign claims several counties improperly compared the number of ballots and voters on election night by counting voter receipts rather than roster signatures -- more on that here. Specifically they called out Hennepin, Ramsey and Dakota counties.

But it's worth noting that some counties do, in fact, mandate counting only the signatures on the roster (though receipts are sometimes used as a backup). Several "excess" ballots have already been tossed as a result, in accordance with the law.

In Stearns and Sherburne counties, where Emmer's support is high, election officials direct judges to count signatures -- not receipts -- to match the number of ballots.

"We go through [instructions] with the judges and the clerks numerous times during training and they are to count signatures," said Stearns County Auditor-Treasurer Randy Schreifels. "So we are very strict on that."

Schreifels said 3 of their 105 precincts found they had too many ballots and proceeded to discard six of them altogether. Excess ballots are often the result of voters not signing the register, he said.

Sherburn County Auditor Diane Arnold said they did not have any reports of excess ballots.
