President Obama's National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform include:
THE CHAIRMEN
Democrat Erskine Bowles, president of the University of North Carolina system. As chief of staff under President Bill Clinton, he helped negotiate the first balanced budget in a generation. He was a member of the National Economic Council and National Security Council and, as deputy White House chief of staff, helped direct the government's response to the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. He serves on the boards of Morgan Stanley and Cousins Properties.
Former Republican Senate leader Alan Simpson of Wyoming. He is known as one of the once-dominant Republican "deficit hawks," who dislike deficits more than they like cutting taxes. He was the second-ranking Senate Republican for a decade, until he was ousted -- by one vote -- in late 1994 by one of the new guard, Trent Lott of Mississippi. He also was one of ten member contributors to the Iraq Study Group Report.
