A (long) day in the life of a 4-H animal and its human

August 27, 2025

Young animal exhibitors care for their cattle, swine, poultry and more at the Minnesota State Fair.

It’s a pig-cuddling, cow-washing, sheep-herding, manure-hauling good time to bring an animal to the State Fair. But 4-H kids from across Minnesota also work long, sweaty days to exhibit and compete at the fair, while also delighting and educating all the city kids who so rarely get to pat a pig. Head, Heart, Hands, and Health — the four Hs — help describe what it takes to get to the fair with a British shorthorn or market gilt swine or a cranky llama that does not want to be dressed up like Santa Claus.
