I'm not sure that Audi's previous TT model was considered a "girl's car" by some macho males, but if it wasn't in that category, it came perilously close. Sports cars, especially roadsters, can succumb to that stereotype with lightning speed if their marketing handlers do not carefully position them as manly machines. That's an important label to be aware of, because women will buy a "guy's car" more often than the reverse.

Whether Audi's motives were driven by virility or simply improving the breed, the result is a new car that can use "sports" as a first name with a straight face. The TT has grown in size and performance while still retaining its classic design.

The roadster now tops its class in weight, despite the liberal use of aluminum. But an optional V-6 engine with plenty of torque counters that dubious distinction. And the added weight gives the new TT a more substantial feel.

While Audi's German competitors - BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche - all have six-cylinder engines in normal and higher output levels, Audi still offers a turbocharged four for those who value thrift. But while the four-cylinder, front-drive version may sneak under the $40-grand price threshold, our 3.2-liter V-6 with Quattro all-wheel drive is the powertrain that makes this roadster really hum.

Audi reworked its V-6 with direct injection to give its big A6 sedan ample power. When that energy is deployed in the lighter TT and connected to either the manual or Tiptronic six-speed transmission driving all four wheels, the result is exhilarating.

Audi has maintained its reputation as the benchmark for interior style and quality in the TT. Controls are intuitive, gauges are easy to read and there's no glare in the windshield to compete with forward visibility.

Audi has made real strides in positioning its vehicles as true competitors against its top German rivals. From that standpoint, our well-equipped TT 3.2 Quattro roadster can spar with BMW's Z4, Porsche Boxster or Mercedes SLK350 and keep a straight face. n
