The red "Schmidt" sign above the historic Schmidt Brewery in St. Paul will glow bright once again.
A new version of the sign, using modern, energy-saving LED lights, will be lit at 8:30 p.m. June 21 as part of the GermanFest celebration in the Fort Road neighborhood.
The former Schmidt Brewery complex is undergoing a $120 million redevelopment that calls for 247 residential affordable units and 13 townhouses for artists.
The St. Paul landmark dates back to 1855, but the building was shuttered in 2004. Plymouth-based Dominium is behind the redevelopment.
The original Schmidt sign was taken down in the early 1990s, but Dominium officials wanted the distinctive sign to be part of the rehabilitated complex. St. Paul-based Lawrence Sign is responsible for construction of the new one.
City Council Member Dave Thune, Dominium Senior Vice President Mark Moorhouse and neighborhood representatives will be on hand for the flip of the switch.
