A 90-year-old Maplewood man is in the Ramsey County jail on suspicion of fatally shooting his 65-year-old son, police officials said Saturday night.

Maplewood Police Chief Paul Schnell said officers responded to a 911 caller at 7:40 p.m., who said he had shot his son with a handgun. Schnell said the suspect was compliant and arrested at his home on Hilltop Court without incident.

Larry Bowser, 65, was pronounced dead at the scene, Schnell said.

Steve Bruner, a neighbor, described Bowser as so nice that it was sometimes almost embarrassing to be with him. For example, at a stoplight, he'd said "hi" to the person in the next car.

"He could talk to anybody," Bruner said. He said Bowser cut grass and did other odd jobs around the neighborhood. He also said Bowser was always careful not to leave his dad alone too long.
