A dusting of snow and temperatures that fell below the freezing mark spelled trouble for commuters in the south metro.
A motorist hit an icy patch on southbound I-35 at County Road 50 and slid across the median and collided with a northbound vehicle. The crash forced MnDOT and the State Patrol to shut down the northbound lanes for about 30 minutes. That led to a massive back up that stretched back beyond 210th Street.
The road reopened about 8:15 a.m. Traffic has since recovered.
Southbound I-35 is still closed at the Northfield exit, Hwy. 19 due to extremely icy conditions.
Currently in the metro area, roads are in decent shape and traffic volumes are light due to the Veterans Day holiday. Parking meters are free in Minneapolis and St. Paul today.
