A 7-year-old boy riding on an ATV died in a crash on the family's property near Moose Lake, Minn., with an 11-year-old girl operating the vehicle, authorities said.

The driver crashed the vehicle about 6:20 p.m. Friday on property on County Road 13 in Moose Lake Township, the Carlton County Sheriff's Office said.

The boy who died was identified by the Sheriff's Office as Drew Nordstrom.

Another girl in the side-by-side ATV, also 11 years old, was taken to a nearby hospital with noncritical injuries, and the driver was not hurt, the Sheriff's Office said. None of the three occupants had on helmets or seat belts.

The ATV was going down a slight hill and rolled onto its side, according to the Sheriff's Office. Drew, who had been riding in the back, was pinned under the vehicle.

Authorities have not released the girls' identities. Nor have they explained how the three children might be related to one another or whether any adults were in the vicinity.

The Moose Lake School District released a statement Monday afternoon that read, "Our hearts are saddened by the loss of our student, Drew Nordstrom. ... Our thoughts are with his parents, Lance and Erin, as well as his siblings and extended family members and friends during this difficult time."

Erin Nordstrom is a fourth-grade teacher in the district.

Drew's online obituary noted that when it came to fun things to do, "dirt bikes, downhill skiing, hockey, biking and scootering were some of his favorites."
