Minnehaha Academy boys' hockey coach Pat Griswold certainly didn't ease senior Alex Katz into his first career start in goal.

Griswold wrote Katz's name into the lineup before Saturday's home game against Legacy Christian.

Katz responded by making 47 saves, including 11 in overtime, helping the Redhawks salvage a 3-3 tie.

Big day in OregonWayzata sophomore cross-country runner Connor Olson earned All-America honors and Wayzata's girls finished seventh -- the highest place ever achieved by a Minnesota team -- at the Nike Cross Nationals Saturday in Portland, Ore.

Traversing a muddy course at the Portland Meadows track, Olson, who was fifth in the Class 2A state meet on Nov. 3, finished sixth in a time of 17:23. Richfield's Obsa Ali, who was second in the state meet, finished 10th with a time of 17:30.

In the girls' race, four-time state Class 2A champion Maria Hauger of Shakopee finished 14th with a 5K time of 20:01.

Anna French paced the Wayzata girls with a 19th-place finish.

Tip-Off ClassicThe premier early-season boys' basketball tournament, the Breakdown Tip-Off Classic, takes place Saturday at Minnetonka High School.

There are some gems among the 14 games, including Hopkins vs. Tartan at 2 p.m.; Minneapolis Washburn vs. Hudson (Wis.) at 4 p.m.; Osseo vs. Eastview at 5:15 p.m.; and Apple Valley vs. Park Center at 6:45 p.m.

Besse hits 200Benilde-St. Margaret's star right-winger Grant Besse reached 200 points for his high school career with his second goal of the game Saturday in the Red Knights' season-opening 6-1 victory over Moorhead. Besse has committed to playing at the University of Wisconsin.

Seiger to coach Edina softballFormer Henry Sibley softball coach Michelle Seiger has been hired as the softball coach at Edina. Seiger is a member of the Minnesota High School Softball coaches Hall of Fame.
